What happened
On July 4, 2025, at approximately 10:03 UTC, a Boeing 737-800, registration LV-FUB, operated by Aerolíneas Argentinas, was conducting a scheduled commercial flight from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires to Santiago, Chile.
During the climb phase, while the aircraft had reached an altitude of approximately 22,000 feet, the number two engine experienced a failure or malfunction. Following the engine issue, the flight crew declared an emergency. The aircraft subsequently returned to its point of origin, Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, where it landed safely using only the remaining operational engine. There were no injuries reported among the 157 occupants on board, though the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
The investigation
The Argentine Transportation Safety Board (JST) has initiated an investigation into the powerplant failure. Current efforts are focused on the collection and analysis of data regarding the aircraft and its operations. Investigators are specifically examining the aircraft components and systems, with a particular emphasis on the powerplant system to determine the exact nature of the malfunction.
