What happened
On October 15, 2025, at 12:45 UTC, an Aerolíneas Argentinas flight, operating as AR1526, was performing a scheduled commercial passenger service from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires to Córdoba. During the takeoff phase from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, the aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 with registration LV-FSK, experienced a malfunction within the left engine.
Following the engine failure, the crew declared an emergency. The flight was diverted from its original destination to Aeropuerto Internacional Ministro Pistarini. The aircraft landed safely at the diversion airport without further incident or injuries to the 168 occupants on board. However, the aircraft sustained substantial damage as a result of the event.
The investigation
The preliminary investigation focused on the powerplant failure involving the CFM56-7B series engine. Investigators examined the mechanical integrity of the engine components following the reported malfunction. The technical analysis centered on the turbine assembly to determine the origin of the failure.
Findings
- The incident was triggered by the detachment of a turbine blade within the left engine.
- The engine failure was classified as a contained failure, meaning the engine casing prevented larger-scale debris from exiting the nacelle, though the internal damage was significant.
