Accident Overview
A Gates Learjet 24B, modified by a Howard/Raisebach Mark II conversion, was involved in an accident during its takeoff climb from runway 28L. The aircraft was cleared for takeoff, and tower personnel estimated that rotation occurred at approximately 3,200 feet down the runway. At around 200 feet above ground level (AGL), the pilot was instructed to contact departure control.
Climb and Loss of Control
Witnesses observed the aircraft climbing in a wings-level attitude. It entered a broken cloud layer at approximately 600 feet AGL. Moments later, the aircraft was seen descending out of the clouds at a steep angle, in a left-wing-low, nose-down attitude. The aircraft impacted the ground between runway 28L and 28R, approximately 10,000 feet from the approach ends of the runways.
Power and Engine Examination
Witnesses reported that the engines sounded as if they were operating at a high power setting. Post-accident examination of the engines revealed evidence that both were at or above 92% power at the time of impact. No preimpact part failure or malfunction was found.
Autopilot Discrepancies
Aircraft records indicated two autopilot discrepancies reported on October 4, 1984. One noted that the roll mode was sensitive; the other that the autopilot intermittently rolled the aircraft into a standard rate left bank when engaged. However, reports indicated that the autopilot would not have been used for takeoff.
Occupants
All three occupants of the aircraft were killed in the accident.
