What happened
While operating a flight from Vnukovo toward Leningrad, the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of approximately 900 meters within cloud cover when the right engine ceased functioning. Following this mechanical failure, the crew encountered difficulties feathering the propeller, which prevented the aircraft from sustaining a safe flying altitude.
In an attempt to manage the emergency, the pilot sought to divert the flight to Vypolzovo Airbase; however, the crew could not establish radio communication with the base for undetermined reasons. As the situation progressed, the pilot attempted an emergency descent and landing in a potato field situated in Ozerevo. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.
This accident resulted in 7 fatalities (comprising five crew members and two passengers) and 12 injuries among the other occupants on board.
Findings
Investigations into the incident determined that the right engine failed during flight because of an oil leak resulting from a failed connection hose.
