What happened
During a special flight transporting a delegation for a royal visit, a four-engine aircraft was performing its final approach to Sibu Airport. While descending toward the runway, the crew encountered an emergency situation that required the immediate shutdown of both the number three and number four engines. Despite the loss of power from these two engines, the flight continued its approach to the airfield.
Upon landing, the aircraft failed to maintain its path along the runway centerline. The plane veered toward the left side of the runway, eventually exiting the paved surface and colliding with nearby trees. The impact and subsequent movement caused significant damage to the airframe, resulting in the aircraft being declared a total loss.
Findings
During the incident, the loss of control on the ground led to several casualties among the occupants. The accident resulted in one fatality, caused by the impact of unsecured baggage within the cabin. Additionally, three persons sustained serious injuries during the excursion. The specific reasons for the simultaneous failure of the two engines remain unidentified.
