What happened
During the final approach phase toward Puerto Maldonado-Padre Aldimaz Airport, a four engine aircraft operated under marginal weather conditions experienced a significant loss of altitude. The crew failed to maintain the necessary height required for a safe descent, leading the plane to descend below the safe flight path.
As the aircraft continued its descent, it struck the roof of a residential structure. The impact caused the plane to crash into several other houses situated only a few hundred meters from the start of the runway. The accident resulted in the deaths of eight occupants on board the aircraft. Additionally, one person on the ground was killed during the collision with the buildings.
Findings
Investigations into the accident indicate that the primary factor was the crew's failure to recognize that the aircraft's altitude had become insufficient for the approach. This lack of situational awareness regarding the plane's vertical position, combined with the challenging weather conditions present at the time, led to the fatal impact with the structures near the airport.
