What happened
During a night-time visual approach to Luzamba Airport, the crew of the aircraft touched down within the initial portion of the runway. Shortly after the first contact, the aircraft experienced an unexpected lift-off, floating a small distance above the runway surface for several seconds before making a second touchdown.
Following this second landing, the pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft within the available 1,500-metre gravel runway. The aircraft subsequently overran the end of the paved surface, descended down an embankment, and eventually came to a stop 16 metres from the runway edge.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair during the excursion.
- All four crew members successfully evacuated the aircraft without injury.
- The incident was characterized by an unexplained aerodynamic lift immediately following the initial touchdown.
