A floatplane operated for Nucleo Comunicazioni Ala Littoria crashed into the water near the Tiber Estuary after an engine failure during climb-out, resulting in five fatalities.

What happened

The incident occurred shortly after departure from the Lido di Ostia seaplane base. While climbing to an altitude of approximately 300 feet, the crew experienced a loss of power on one engine. The captain initiated a return to the origin. During the approach phase, after crossing over the Tiber Estuary, the aircraft encountered atmospheric turbulence. This condition led to an aerodynamic stall, causing the floatplane to crash. All five occupants were killed in the accident.

Findings

The aircraft was identified by the military registration MM60419. It was being operated on behalf of Nucleo Comunicazioni Ala Littoria. The official investigation attributed the event to engine problems.
