An aircraft crashed into a mountain slope near Olías while en route from Sevilla to Melilla, resulting in the deaths of 15 occupants and two survivors.

What happened

During a scheduled flight from Sevilla to Melilla, the crew encountered reduced visibility conditions caused by fog. The aircraft descended to an altitude that was too low for the terrain ahead. Consequently, the airplane impacted the slope of a mountain situated near Olías, approximately 11 kilometers northeast of Málaga. Following the impact, rescue operations recovered two passengers who survived the accident. 15 other occupants were killed in the crash.

Findings

The official investigation determined that the accident was caused by controlled flight into terrain. The primary contributing factor was the crew's failure to maintain a safe altitude above the mountainous terrain while operating in limited visibility conditions.

Probable cause

Controlled flight into terrain due to insufficient altitude clearance in foggy conditions.
