Aircraft accident at Ubatuba Airport involving engine issues

No fatalities • Ubatuba, Brazil • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft diverted to Ubatuba Airport due to engine difficulties and subsequently veered off the runway, resulting in several injuries.

What happened

During a flight originating from Angra dos Reis, the crew encountered mechanical difficulties with the engines while initiating their descent toward Campo de Marte Airport. In response to these engine problems, the flight was diverted to Ubatuba Airport.

Upon landing on runway 09, which has a length of 940 metres, the crew attempted a maneuver intended to trade airspeed for altitude. During this process, the aircraft type veered off the runway surface and crashed into a swampy region situated to the left of the overshoot area. The impact with multiple trees caused the aircraft to lose both of its wings and its empennage, leading to the total destruction of the plane.

Out of the passengers and crew on board, two crew members and two passengers sustained injuries. The remaining six passengers were able to escape the wreckage without harm.

Findings

  • The flight was diverted from its original destination due to reported engine malfunctions.
  • The aircraft veered off the runway during an altitude-for-speed maneuver following touchdown.
