What happened
A private flight involving a single engine aircraft departed from Essen-Mülheim Airport, destined for Westerland-Sylt Airport. The flight was carrying two people, consisting of the pilot and one passenger. During the descent toward the destination, the aircraft encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by snowfall and fog, which significantly reduced visibility.
As the aircraft was performing its approach to the airfield, it crashed a short distance from Westerland-Sylt Airport. The impact resulted in two fatalities, as both the pilot and the passenger were killed in the accident.
Findings
The accident occurred while the aircraft was in the approach phase of flight. The primary factor contributing to the crash was the presence of poor visibility caused by fog and snow during the descent and approach to the airport.
