What happened
An early morning private flight departed from Toussus-le-Noble Airport, destined for Fairoaks, carrying two occupants. Approximately 40 minutes after takeoff, while cruising at 18,000 feet, the pilot noted fluctuations in manifold pressure, which dropped from 30 to 28 inches of mercury before rising to 33 inches and subsequently falling again. Following these fluctuations, a burning odor became noticeable within the cabin.
In response to the developing situation, the pilot declared an emergency and initiated a diversion to Abbeville Airport, located roughly 15 NM from the aircraft's position. During the descent, the pilot reduced engine power and extended the landing gear. As the aircraft reached an altitude just below 10,000 feet, the oil pressure warning light illuminated, followed by engine vibrations and a complete loss of engine power.
At the time of the engine failure, the aircraft was operating in IMC conditions and was approximately 10 NM from the destination. While attempting a short final approach, the pilot regained visual contact with the runway at an altitude of 300 feet, but the aircraft lacked sufficient glide distance. The single-engine aircraft subsequently impacted a field and stopped 200 metres before reaching runway 20. Both occupants managed to exit the wreckage uninjured, though the aircraft sustained damage beyond repair.
Findings
- The flight experienced significant manifold pressure instability and a burning smell prior to the emergency.
- Total engine failure occurred during the descent following an oil pressure warning and heavy vibrations.
