What happened
While operating a flight from Irkutsk toward Bratsk, the crew encountered deteriorating weather conditions characterized by thunderstorms. During the flight, the aircraft departed from its planned trajectory. Shortly after this deviation, a fuel warning alarm alerted the crew to critical levels of remaining propellant.
In an effort to manage the situation, the crew initiated an emergency descent and landing procedure. The aircraft type impacted a wooded region during the attempt. While the impact resulted in the aircraft being damaged beyond repair, there were no fatalities or injuries reported among those on board.
Findings
Investigations into the incident revealed that the crew was operating under inaccurate meteorological information. The weather bulletin received prior to the flight failed to communicate the presence of thunderstorm activity along the route. This lack of accurate forecasting, combined with the resulting low fuel conditions, necessitated the emergency landing attempt.
