What happened
During the final approach to Pavlodar Airport, air traffic control directed the flight crew to execute a left turn to maintain separation from another arriving aircraft. As the aircraft reached the short final phase, approximately 300 meters before the runway threshold and at an altitude of 50 meters, the flight path was positioned 51 meters to the left of the runway centerline. Rather than performing a go-around, the crew proceeded with the landing.
The aircraft type touched down on the right side of the runway, roughly 7 to 10 meters from the left edge, traveling at 205 km/h with a descent rate of 2.5 m/sec. Following the initial contact, the plane bounced and made a second touchdown 30 meters further down the runway. The aircraft then lost control and drifted rightward off the paved surface. During the excursion, the plane struck a parked Yakovlev Yak-40, registration CCCP-87451, located on the apron. While both aircraft were destroyed in the collision, all 22 occupants were successfully evacuated from the wreckage.
Findings
- The crew failed to initiate a go-around despite being significantly off the runway centerline during the final approach.
- The decision to continue the approach instead of performing a go-around led to the loss of directional control and the subsequent collision with the stationary aircraft.
