Alaska Airlines is expanding its presence at San Diego International Airport by adding flights, leaning on its Horizon regional brand to do so. The carrier built its reputation on a large Pacific Northwest hub and has been building up in Southern California.

Southwest Airlines has historically been the busiest airline at San Diego. Alaska's growth there relies heavily on the regional operation, an asset Southwest does not have. The regional jets in question seat 76 passengers.
