Alaska Airlines places 105-jet Boeing 737 MAX 10 order before certification
Alaska Airlines has ordered 105 Boeing 737 MAX 10s, its biggest ever aircraft purchase, even though the type is still awaiting FAA certification. The order was placed two years after a door plug blowout grounded its MAX 9 fleet.
Alaska Airlines has agreed to buy 105 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, the largest order in its 93-year history. The carrier committed more than $13 billion at list prices for a type that has not yet received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The MAX 10 has been in its certification campaign for over five years. According to the source, the programme has been delayed by a redesign of the engine anti-icing system and an upgrade to the crew alerting system that Congress required following the MAX crashes of 2018 and 2019.
The purchase was announced on January 7, two years to the day after the door plug blowout on Alaska Flight 1282, which led to the grounding of the airline's MAX 9 fleet.
Neither the airline nor the manufacturer has said when the first aircraft is expected to be delivered.
