American Airlines is expanding its AAdvantage loyalty programme with an option to pay for flights using cash and miles together, according to the airline. Eligible members will get the feature in stages over the coming weeks on the carrier's website and in its app.

Travellers first select a regularly paid flight, then use a slider during booking to set what share of the price they want to cover with AAdvantage miles. The rest is paid in cash.

American Airlines says the change is meant to give members more ways to put smaller mileage balances toward flight bookings.
