Ethiopian Airlines begins work on new mega airport near Bishoftu

Ethiopian Airlines has broken ground on a large new airport hub southeast of Addis Ababa, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, with the first phase due to open in 2030.

Ethiopian Airlines has begun building a new airport hub on farmland outside Bishoftu, roughly 28 miles (45 km) southeast of Addis Ababa. Work started on January 10, 2026, the carrier said.

Zaha Hadid Architects designed the project, which its backers call the largest aviation infrastructure project in African history. The first phase is due to open in 2030.

The airline said the finished hub is meant to change how much of the African continent connects to the rest of the world.
