EU research programme funds 19 projects for greener aircraft
Clean Aviation is allocating €290 million in EU funding to 19 projects covering hybrid-electric and hydrogen propulsion, lighter structures, noise reduction and de-icing. Ground and flight tests are planned for 2029 and 2030.
The European research programme Clean Aviation is providing €290 million in EU funding for 19 new projects. Combined with private and other public contributions, the work is to be financed at a total volume of €664 million, according to the programme.
The projects cover hybrid-electric and hydrogen-based propulsion, lighter aircraft structures, and technologies for noise reduction and de-icing. They are intended to move from research into the demonstration phase.
Ground and flight tests are planned for 2029 and 2030. The stated goal is to cut greenhouse gas emissions from regional and short- to medium-range aircraft by at least 30 percent compared with 2020 levels.
In the longer term, the technologies are meant to form the basis for aircraft entering service from 2035.
