FAA Installs 100th Surface Awareness Initiative System at US Airports

The FAA has deployed its 100th Surface Awareness Initiative system, expanding real-time surface surveillance at airports nationwide.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has installed its 100th Surface Awareness Initiative system. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the milestone on September 2. The programme expands surface surveillance at airports across the country, giving controllers real-time information on aircraft and vehicles moving on the airport surface.

The SAI systems use Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data to display traffic positions on airport diagrams in control towers. This improves situational awareness at airports that lack surface surveillance radar.
