Panama to invest $306.75 million in Tocumen airport expansion

Tocumen International Airport in Panama is moving forward with two infrastructure projects worth an estimated $306.75 million to expand Terminal 2 and rehabilitate airfield pavements.

Tocumen International Airport is advancing two strategic infrastructure projects with a combined estimated investment of $306.75 million. The works aim to expand the operational capacity of Terminal 2, modernize the airfield, and correct structural failures in taxiway areas.

The first project, titled "Study, Design, Construction and Equipment for the Expansion of Terminal 2 (South Pier)", is in public bidding through the PanamaCompra platform under a Best Value procurement mechanism. The call was published on July 16, 2026, with a deadline for proposal submissions on September 28 of the same year. The reference price is $208.75 million.

The project has an execution period of 30 months from the issuance of the work order, followed by a 12-month maintenance period. It includes ten new contact boarding gates and four remote boarding lounges, construction of a new contact aircraft parking apron, new taxiways associated with the South Pier, and extension of the taxiway access to the runway. Support infrastructure includes fuel supply systems, apron lighting, visual aids, and storm drainage.

A second project addresses structural failures in taxiways, with rehabilitation of pavements in those areas. The source says these investments will ensure Panama's competitiveness as the main air connection hub between Central America, South America, North America, and the Caribbean.
