KLM will bring free high-speed Wi-Fi to its intercontinental flights from the middle of 2027, extending a service it already offers on European routes across its entire long-haul network. The carrier announced the plan as it marked its 107th anniversary.

The rollout will happen in phases and cover every cabin class, with unlimited internet access for the duration of the flight, according to the airline.

KLM chose Starlink, the low Earth orbit satellite network run by SpaceX. The airline said the network provides fast, reliable, low-latency broadband with global coverage over oceans, land and remote routes, and that passengers and crew will be able to connect from the moment they board.

Activities the link is meant to support include web browsing, email, music streaming, live film and series streaming and in-flight online gaming.

Access will go to members of the Flying Blue loyalty programme. Registered passengers can log in with their Flying Blue account. The announcement did not set out details for other members.

"We are making a long-cherished wish of our passengers come true: fast, free Wi-Fi on intercontinental flights from mid-2027," chief executive Marjan Rintel said. She added that the move is part of the airline's efforts to offer a comfortable, digitally connected travel experience, and that it will let travellers stay connected even over the ocean.
