Lufthansa A380 turns back over Atlantic, diverts to Boston
A Lufthansa Airbus A380 flying from Washington Dulles to Munich reversed course over the North Atlantic on Saturday evening and landed at Boston Logan instead.
A Lufthansa flight to Germany turned back over the North Atlantic on Saturday evening and landed at Boston Logan International Airport, the airline said.
Flight LH415, an Airbus A380-841 registered D-AIMC, had left Washington Dulles International Airport on a scheduled long-haul service to Munich Airport. It climbed along the US East Coast, cruising at 37,000 feet and later 38,000 feet.
About two and a half hours in, with the jet just past the coastline and over open water, the crew reversed course toward North American airspace. Tracking data showed the aircraft losing altitude on its way to New England before it was cleared for the unscheduled arrival at Logan.
Lufthansa confirmed the diversion shortly after the A380 began its approach. The carrier said a new departure from Boston Terminal E was set for 04:30 local time to limit the effect on passengers, and ground staff at Logan were on hand for the incoming superjumbo and to help travellers during the overnight wait.
The airline has not yet given a reason for the turnback. The aircraft touched down at 07:57 UTC on runway 33L.
