Munich airport sees Middle East demand recover after Iran conflict
Munich Airport says seat load factors on its Middle East routes have returned to around 80 percent after a weak first half, as it courts Arab travellers with a new Terminal 1 pier.
Munich Airport says demand on its Middle East routes has recovered after a difficult first half of the year. Seat load factor between Munich and the region has been back at 80 percent since the start of September, Corinna Born, the airport's head of international relations, told the Arabian Travel Market trade fair in Dubai. The Iran conflict had weighed on the Arab routes, she said.
Germany's second-largest airport has also changed its facilities to serve passengers from the Arab world more directly. At the centre of that effort is a pier at Terminal 1, completed in April. Born called it a premium product aimed partly at Arab passengers and said it raises capacity by six million travellers a year, from 20 million.
The pier has halal menus and spacious lounges for travellers from the Middle East. Ten Arab airlines fly from Terminal 1, among them Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways. Terminal 2 is reserved for Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners, including Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, United Airlines and Air China.
The figures cover the airport's Middle East connections as a group, not a single route.
