Orlando airport opens first upgraded people mover track to Gates 100-129

Orlando International Airport has placed a new automated people mover track into service as part of a $253 million replacement of its Gate Link system. The first of two tracks serving Gates 100-129 began operating on 13 October.

Orlando International Airport has begun running upgraded automated people mover service to Gates 100-129. It is the first major step in a $253 million programme to replace and modernise the airport's Gate Link system.

The new track opened on 13 October, with new vehicles and rebuilt infrastructure on one of the two lines serving those gates. Each new train holds up to 240 passengers.

According to the airport, the work covers the track, the power supply equipment, the systems that control and communicate with the vehicles, and their operating software. New platform screen doors are being fitted as well.

The Gate Link Replacement Project is part of a wider $6.9 billion Capital Improvement Programme to update facilities and ease the passenger journey.

With one track in service, attention turns to the second line to Gates 100-129. The project then moves on to Gates 70-99, where both tracks, the trains and the related systems will be replaced or upgraded. The phased schedule lets passengers keep using the finished track while the rest of the work continues.
