PIA Boeing 777 declares emergency on approach to Manchester
A Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 777 bound for Manchester squawked 7700 while descending into UK airspace and landed safely, the airline and airport have not yet given a reason for the declaration.
A Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 777 declared a general emergency on Wednesday while approaching Manchester Airport, shortly after entering British airspace.
Flight PK701, a Boeing 777-240LR registered AP-BGY, departed Islamabad International Airport at 12:15 PKT. After roughly eight hours across Central Asia and Europe, the crew transmitted squawk code 7700, the transponder signal for an in-flight emergency, as the aircraft started its descent.
The squawk gave the flight priority handling from UK air traffic control ahead of other traffic and prompted ground emergency services to prepare as a precaution, according to the account. The flight was expected at Manchester around 16:25 BST.
Neither the airline nor the airport has confirmed why the emergency was declared. Transponder emergency signals can reflect a medical emergency, a mechanical problem, a change in cabin pressurisation, or other system warnings that call for quick ground assistance.
The aircraft landed on runway 23R at 16:23 BST and later taxied to a gate.
