Premium economy cabin value questioned as fares climb
The premium economy cabin has evolved far beyond its 1990s origins, but the extra space now comes at a steep price, opening room for yet another tier between standard economy and premium economy.
Premium economy now sits between standard economy and business class as a cabin in its own right. It began in the early 1990s, bridging a widening gap between the two.
The product has changed considerably since. Passengers once got little more than extra space; today they can pay a substantial premium for a seat and service resembling business class products of earlier years.
That shift has opened room for a product to fill the space between coach and premium economy.
