Raleigh–Durham's two failed hub attempts by American and Midway
Two carriers tried to build connecting hubs at Raleigh–Durham International Airport and both shut down operations. American Airlines ran a hub there from 1987 to 1995, and Midway Airlines ceased all operations in 2003.
Raleigh–Durham International Airport has hosted two failed attempts at a connecting hub, according to an account of its history.
The first came in 1987, when American Airlines opened a north-south hub at the North Carolina airport. It built a dedicated terminal and expanded the operation to 211 daily departures serving 64 destinations. After years of losses, the airline shut the hub down in 1995.
Midway Airlines moved into the same terminal that year and relocated its headquarters to North Carolina, where it employed 2,250 people. It collapsed after the events of September 11, ceasing all operations in 2003.
Neither attempt left the airport with a lasting hub.
