Riyadh airport suspends operations after attack on terminal

Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority said operations at King Khalid International Airport were halted after a new attack on airport infrastructure, with flights cancelled or diverted and dozens reported injured.

Flights at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport were suspended on Saturday after what the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation called, in a statement, a new attack on airport infrastructure. More than a dozen ambulances went to the terminal, and emergency protocols were activated at health facilities nearby.

Flight tracking data showed all flights to Riyadh cancelled or diverted. Several Gulf carriers dropped their schedules to and from the airport, including Kuwait Airways, which cited the security situation at the terminal. Witnesses described effects near gate 401 of the domestic terminal, reporting panic and people injured. Hospital sources cited by AFP said dozens were wounded. Medical staff were called in on an emergency basis, and hospitals described a serious emergency situation.

The attack came after a series of recent strikes on the country's aviation infrastructure. A day earlier, authorities said three Saudi citizens, including a pilot, were killed in two earlier attacks on the same airport claimed by the Iran-backed Houthis. Three other people died in attacks on two other sites.
