United cancels Denver 9/11 flyover after community concerns

United Airlines has canceled a planned memorial flyover in Denver that was to take place on the morning of September 11, citing concerns raised by members of the community. The flyover would have featured a Boeing 777 accompanied by F-16 fighter jets from Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, timed to coincide with United-organized commemorative events at Denver International Airport and the airline's Flight Training Center. According to a statement from the airline, the flyover was intended as a meaningful gesture to honor the memory of those lost within the pilot community, but those plans will be suspended. Other events of the day will proceed as scheduled.

The Denver Office of Emergency Management had previously advised the public about the flyover, noting that the aircraft would be louder and more noticeable than typical passenger jets and that there was no emergency. On Wednesday, the office announced the cancellation, saying there will be no aircraft flyover associated with the memorial events on Friday, Sept. 11.
