United flight to Cape Town diverts to Newark after medical emergency
A United Airlines Boeing 787-9 bound for Cape Town diverted to Newark after a passenger fell ill about two hours into the flight.
A United Airlines flight from Washington Dulles to Cape Town diverted to Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday after a passenger had a medical emergency about two hours into the journey.
United Flight UA1011, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, departed Washington at 7:30 p.m. EDT. The crew turned back toward Newark while the aircraft was over the Atlantic. As it neared the New York area, the pilots declared an emergency and squawked 7700 for priority handling.
The aircraft landed safely at Newark about three hours and fifteen minutes after takeoff, where medical personnel were waiting.
After a four-hour ground stop to allow medical responders to work, refuel, and update logistics, the flight resumed its journey to Cape Town. Arrival there was expected around 11:00 p.m. local time.
