Aerolineas Argentinas Aircraft Rolls Forward into Jetway at Gate

Casualties unknown • Miami, FL, US

An Aerolineas Argentinas aircraft rolled forward after parking due to a failed parking brake, striking the jetway and damaging wing panels despite wheel chocks being in place.

What happened

The incident occurred during the landing phase of a flight operated by Aerolineas Argentinas. The pilot utilized the entire length of the runway for deceleration because the number two engine reverser was inoperative. Only the wheel brakes were used to slow the aircraft and taxi it to the gate.

Upon arrival at the gate, the captain set the parking brake and received confirmation that wheel chocks had been placed in front of the nose wheel tire. Shortly after this procedure, a ground crewman alerted the captain that the aircraft was rolling forward. The captain applied the brakes immediately; however, the aircraft contacted the jetway before coming to a complete stop. This collision caused substantial damage to two of the top inboard wing panels.

The aircraft was registered to Aerolineas Argentinas, and the captain held an Argentine pilot certificate.

Probable cause

The failure of the parking brake system to hold the aircraft stationary after arrival at the gate, resulting in a collision with the jetway.
