An aircraft with tailwind and overweight conditions failed to sustain flight after takeoff. The pilot intentionally landed beyond the runway on snow, causing nose gear collapse and damage.

Flight Sequence

The pilot planned to back taxi for takeoff on Runway 36. The tower controller asked if a departure on Runway 18 would be acceptable to accommodate an arriving aircraft, and the pilot accepted the clearance. He started his takeoff with 3,900 feet remaining on the 6,399-foot runway. After initial lift-off, the aircraft would not sustain flight. The pilot then intentionally landed beyond the end of the runway on snow-covered terrain.

Aftermath

Subsequently, the nose gear collapsed and the aircraft was damaged.

Investigation Findings

An investigation revealed there was a slight tail wind, and the aircraft was approximately 1,200 to 1,400 pounds over its maximum weight limit. Additionally, the leading edges of the wings had some residual in-flight ice that the de-ice boots had not cleared from the previous day's flight.
