What happened
The incident occurred at the conclusion of a solo training flight involving a full stop landing maneuver. The pilot was executing a short field approach technique when the aircraft's airspeed began to deteriorate significantly during the flare phase. The speed dropped to just one knot above the published stall speed for the aircraft.
As the aircraft approached the ground, it drifted toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft touched down off the paved surface and entered a ditch located adjacent to the runway. The impact caused the nose gear to collapse, resulting in the aircraft nosing over.
The investigation
Examination of the flight data revealed that the primary factor leading to the accident was the loss of controlled flight during the landing flare. The pilot failed to maintain adequate airspeed to sustain lift and control authority as the aircraft transitioned from the approach to the ground contact phase.
Findings
The investigation determined that the student pilot's inadequate airspeed management during the short field landing flare contributed to the accident. The drift to the left and subsequent off-runway touchdown were direct consequences of this loss of energy. The structural damage was consistent with a nose-over impact into soft terrain.
