What happened
The aircraft was operating on the ground, having just completed a landing. Following touchdown, the flight crew taxied the airplane toward its assigned parking position at the terminal gate. As the pilot maneuvered the aircraft into position, the number one engine came into contact with an adjacent jetway bridge.
The jetway had not been fully retracted from its previous use. Consequently, as the airplane approached the gate area, the rotating engine nacelle struck the stationary structure of the jetway. The impact resulted in scraping, dents, and puncture damage to the engine nacelle.
The investigation
Examination of the aircraft revealed physical damage consistent with contact between the engine and the jetway bridge. The damage was confined to the number one engine nacelle. No other parts of the aircraft were reported as damaged by this specific incident.
Findings
The primary factor contributing to the incident was the position of the adjacent jetway. It had not been completely retracted after its last use, leaving it in a position that obstructed the taxi path for the arriving aircraft.
