Incident Overview
A hot air balloon experienced a challenging landing sequence in a field. The pilot reported that there were no pre-impact anomalies with the balloon.
Sequence of Events
While the balloon was landing in a field, the wind shifted. As a result, the balloon impacted a tree. Following the impact, the balloon ascended approximately 50 feet back into the air. The pilot then cautioned his two passengers to hold on and brace for a hard landing.
The balloon descended rapidly and hit the ground with significant force. The basket rolled onto its side during the landing.
Passenger Injury
During the roll, one of the passengers fell out of the basket. The passenger impacted the ground face first, resulting in a broken nose and a broken cheek bone.
Final Landing
After the passenger fell, the balloon lifted off the ground again before settling back for its final landing. The pilot noted that there were no mechanical or operational issues with the balloon prior to the incident.
