Accident Overview
A helicopter pilot was engaged in agricultural chemical application to a cornfield while paralleling a highway. The pilot gained altitude to clear a homestead property and then descended back into the field to continue spraying after passing the homestead.
Impact and Sequence
During the descent, the helicopter struck an unmarked wire that was strung diagonally between the road being paralleled and the corner of the homestead property. The impact caused the helicopter to hit the field. The main rotor blades separated from the airframe, leading the helicopter to cartwheel before coming to a stop.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that there was no mechanical malfunction or failure of the helicopter prior to the wire strike.
