Incident Overview
During a helicopter instructional flight, a certificated flight instructor (CFI) and a student pilot were performing a simulated engine failure maneuver. As the helicopter descended, the engine rpm began to decrease. The intended approach path required the helicopter to overfly trees before reaching the landing area.
Sequence of Events
As the helicopter approached the intended landing area, the student pilot raised the collective, which further decreased the rotor rpm. The CFI responded by lowering the collective and increasing the throttle. The helicopter then landed hard, bounced, landed a second time, and rolled onto its left side. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the tailboom.
Postaccident Investigation
A postaccident investigation revealed no preexisting mechanical anomalies that would have precluded normal operation. Additionally, neither pilot reported any mechanical malfunctions with the helicopter.
