What happened
On October 25, 2019, an IndiGo Air Airbus A320-271N Neo, registration VT-ITA, was climbing from Mumbai Airport, India, toward Coimbatore Airport, India, when the aircraft experienced a failure of the No. 2 (right) engine. The failure was preceded by an engine stall warning, high vibration levels, and exhaust gas temperature exceeding limits.
Following the failure, the crew performed an in-flight shutdown of the No. 2 engine. The aircraft then executed an air turn back and completed an uneventful landing at the departure airport. There were no injuries resulting from the incident.
The investigation
An inspection of the engine conducted after the landing confirmed a failure of a 3rd stage blade in the low pressure turbine. The NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the government of India with the investigation as the state of engine manufacturer.
