Incident Overview
On October 30, 2019, an IndiGo Air Airbus A320-271N Neo, powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM geared turbofan engines, experienced an engine failure during the climb phase of its flight from Kolkata Airport to Pune Airport, India. The event was preceded by an ENG#1 stall warning and high vibration readings from the No. 1 (left) engine.
Engine Failure and Crew Actions
Following the stall warning and high vibration, the flight crew performed an in-flight shutdown of the No. 1 engine. The crew then executed an air turn back to Kolkata Airport, where an uneventful landing was made.
Post-Flight Inspection
Post-landing inspection of the No. 1 engine confirmed a failure of the low pressure turbine 3rd stage blade.
Investigation
The government of India has notified the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the incident. The NTSB has appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative, as the state of manufacturer of the engine, to assist the government of India in their investigation under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13. All investigative information will be released by the government of India.
