Incident Overview
On October 24, 2019, an IndiGo Air Airbus A320-271N Neo powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM geared turbofan engines was involved in an incident during a flight from Kolkata Airport to Chennai Airport, India.
Flight Details
The aircraft departed from Kolkata en route to Chennai. During the flight, the No. 2 (right) engine failed. The failure was preceded by an ENG#1 stall warning and high vibration indications. The flight crew responded by shutting down the affected engine and performing an air turn back to the departure airport. The aircraft landed without further incident.
Post-Landing Inspection
Following the landing, an inspection of the failed engine was conducted. The inspection confirmed a low pressure turbine 3rd stage blade failure as the source of the engine malfunction.
Investigation
The government of India has notified the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the incident. As the state of manufacture of the engine, the NTSB has appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the government of India in the investigation under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13. All investigative information will be released by the government of India.
