What happened
On October 24, 2019, an IndiGo Air Airbus A320-271N Neo, registration VT-IVX, was operating a flight from Kolkata Airport, India, to Chennai Airport, India. During the flight, the aircraft experienced an engine stall warning on engine number 1, followed by high vibration and a failure of the number 2 (right) engine. The crew shut down the engine and performed an air turn back to the departure airport. The aircraft landed at Kolkata Airport without further incident. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
The investigation
An inspection of the engine following the landing confirmed a failure of a third-stage blade in the low-pressure turbine.
