Incident Overview
On October 26, 2019, the government of India notified the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of an incident involving an Airbus A320 airplane. The aircraft, an IndiGo Air Airbus A320-271N Neo powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM geared turbofan engines, experienced a No. 2 (right) engine failure during a flight from Delhi Airport to Goa Airport, India. The failure was preceded by an ENG#2 stall warning and high vibration. The crew shut down the affected engine and performed an air turn back to the departure airport, where an uneventful landing was made.
Post-Landing Inspection
Following the landing, an engine inspection was conducted. The inspection confirmed a failure of the low pressure turbine 3rd stage blade.
Investigation
The NTSB has appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative as the state of manufacture of the engine to assist the government of India in their investigation under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13. All investigative information will be released by the government of India.
