Incident Overview
On December 22, 2019, a GoAir Airbus A320-271N Neo encountered high engine vibrations during a scheduled flight from Mumbai Airport, Maharashtra, to Chandigarh Airport, India. The aircraft, powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM geared turbofan engines, was forced to perform an air turn back to Mumbai. An uneventful landing was subsequently carried out.
Flight Details
The flight had departed from Mumbai and was en route to Chandigarh when the crew reported abnormal engine vibrations. In response, the decision was made to return to the departure airport. The aircraft landed safely without further incident.
Post-Landing Inspection
Following the landing, engineers conducted an inspection of the engines. The examination confirmed a failure of the low pressure turbine 3rd stage blade in one of the engines. The specific engine involved was not detailed in the initial report.
Investigation
The government of India notified the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the incident. As the state of manufacture of the engines, the NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the Indian authorities under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13. All investigative information will be released by the government of India.
