Incident Overview
The government of India notified the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of an incident involving a GoAir Airbus A320-271N Neo aircraft that occurred on December 23, 2019. The aircraft was powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM geared turbofan engines.
Sequence of Events
During a flight from Guwahati Airport to Kolkata Airport in India, one of the engines experienced an inflight shutdown. The flight crew executed an air turn back to Guwahati, where the airplane landed without further incident.
Investigation
Post-landing inspection of the affected engine revealed a failure of the low pressure turbine (LPT) 3rd stage blade. The NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative as the state of manufacturer of the engine to assist the government of India in their investigation under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13. All investigative information will be released by the government of India.
