Accident Overview
On August 15, 2024, at approximately 1335 mountain daylight time, an Evektor-Aerotechnik AS Harmony LSA airplane, registration N272JT, was substantially damaged in an accident near Grants, New Mexico. The pilot reported no injuries. The airplane was being operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, during takeoff from runway 31 at Grants-Milan Municipal Airport (GNT), the engine lost power when the airplane was about 200 to 300 feet above ground level. The pilot executed a forced landing to the remaining runway. During the landing roll, the airplane departed the end of the runway, struck a shrub and a large rock. The left main landing gear separated from the airframe, and the airplane came to rest upright approximately 600 feet beyond the runway end.
Damage and Examination
Postaccident examination revealed substantial damage to both wings. The airplane was recovered to a secure area for further examination. No determination of cause was provided in the initial report.
