What happened
During a scheduled military training program involving the interception of a SU-11 fighter, an AN-12 transport aircraft was flying alongside two other similar aircraft. The mission originated from Šiauliai Airport. While the formation was maintaining a cruising altitude of 6,350 metres, a mid-air collision occurred between the AN-12 and the fighter jet.
Following the impact, both aircraft lost stability and entered an uncontrolled descent. The wreckage of both planes crashed in the vicinity of Kresttsy. The accident resulted in the deaths of all eight crew members aboard the AN-12, along with the single pilot operating the SU-11, totaling nine fatalities.
