Incident Overview
On an unspecified date, the pilot Angel Lenin Iglesias Hernández stole an aircraft at Pinar del Río Airport in Cuba. He took off with nine of his family members, intending to reach Florida. En route, the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 145 kilometers southwest of Key West.
Rescue Operations
A passenger was killed in the crash. The nine other occupants were rescued by the crew of the bulk carrier 'Chios Dream', which was in the vicinity and responded to the emergency.
Probable Cause
The official investigation determined that the accident was caused by engine failure due to fuel exhaustion.
