What happened
On the flight from Tomsk Airport to Surgulent, a twin-engine aircraft (callsign IK9007/SP5007) was transporting 33 passengers and four crew members. Approximately 86 minutes after departure, the flight crew observed a warning light indicating metal chips in the oil of the left engine. Shortly thereafter, a burning odor was detected within the cockpit.
In response to the mechanical warning, the captain initially intended to divert the flight to Nizhnevartovsk Airport. However, during the descent phase, the left engine ignited. The crew attempted to mitigate the situation by feathering the propeller and subsequently changed their diversion target to Strezhevoy Airport.
As the fire remained uncontrolled, the pilot executed an emergency landing on the surface of the Ob River. Upon impact with the water, the aircraft broke into two separate sections and settled in shallow water. The accident resulted in seven fatalities, while the remaining occupants were successfully rescued from the wreckage.
Findings
- The sequence of events began with a mechanical failure indicated by a 'chips in oil' warning in the left engine.
- An uncontrolled engine fire during the descent prevented the crew from reaching a designated diversion airport.
