Aircraft accident during approach to Nizhneangarsk

2 fatalities • Nizhneangarsk, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft operating from Ulan-Ude to Nizhneangarsk veered off the runway and struck a building following an engine failure during descent.

What happened

During a flight originating from Ulan-Ude and bound for Nizhneangarsk, the flight crew notified air traffic control of a malfunction involving the left engine while descending through 3,050 metres. This occurred approximately 30 km from the destination airport. Despite the engine failure, the flight proceeded with the approach to runway 22.

Upon landing, the crew attempted to use the aircraft's braking systems. During this process, the aircraft type deviated toward the right side of the runway and exited the paved surface. The aircraft traveled across a grassy area, breached the perimeter fence, and collided with a sewage treatment plant structure situated 380 metres to the right of the runway centerline. A fire broke out following the impact, resulting in the total destruction of the plane.
