What happened
During an approach to Manila-Ninoy Aquino Airport, the flight crew encountered severe weather characterized by heavy rainfall and significant wind. While on final approach, Air Traffic Control (ATC) notified the pilot that the aircraft was too high on the glide path and recommended performing a go-around. However, the captain proceeded with the landing attempt.
The aircraft touched down significantly further down runway 06 than intended due to the wet surface conditions. Because of the late touchdown point, the crew was unable to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the pavement. The aircraft subsequently overran the runway, breached a concrete wall, and lost its landing gear. The sequence ended when the plane came to a stop on a nearby motorway, where it collided with several vehicles.
The accident resulted in one fatality among the passengers and eight fatalities on the ground. Rescue operations successfully recovered all other occupants from the aircraft, though the incident caused 87 injuries among those on board and 19 injuries to individuals on the ground.
